Lan Ha Bay Cruise: Two Nights or One?

Lan Ha Bay cruise 2 days 1 night or 3 days 2 nights: what the second night adds on the water, what it costs, and who should take which.

Updated November 2026

Two nights if you want a whole day in the bay; one night if you want the bay at dusk and dawn and nothing more. The difference is the middle day: on Carnival’s three days it is Viet Hai village by bicycle and an afternoon at Ba Trai Dao beach, and it costs from $266 a person against $142 in current promotion (usually $182) for BAT Group’s one night (checked November 2026).

The calendar above is the two-night cruise: Carnival’s Hanoi: 3Day 5-Star Cruise Ha Long, Lan Ha & Viet Hai Cycling, from Tuan Chau Marina, with a balcony cabin, every meal and the taxes and sightseeing fees included.

Map of Lan Ha Bay and the south of Ha Long Bay: Tuan Chau Marina where the ships check in, the Dark and Bright Cave visited on day one, and Viet Hai village on Cat Ba Island, reached only on the middle day of a two-night cruise
One night reaches the cave or a beach; the second night adds Viet Hai village on Cat Ba.

Cruises: BAT Group’s two days and Carnival’s three days (GetYourGuide checked November 2026). Bay fees: the Cat Ba bays management board’s table, in force since 1 January 2026; Carnival’s listing includes the fees.

What one night still gets you

BAT Group’s *Hanoi: 2 Days Lan Ha & Halong Bay 5-Star Cruise with Balcony* checks in at Tuan Chau Harbor, serves lunch as the ship crosses into Lan Ha Bay, then gives you one afternoon stop, chosen by the captain for the weather and tide: the Dark and Bright Cave by kayak or bamboo boat, or kayaking and a swim at Ba Trai Dao or Tra Bau. Sunset, a cooking class and dinner at anchor follow; the next morning is Tai Chi, a short kayak at Ao Ech or a cave on Cat Ba, and brunch on the way back.

That is enough to see the bay when it is at its quietest, at dusk and first light. What it does not give you is Cat Ba itself, or more than one stop.

What the second night adds

On Carnival’s three days the extra 24 hours are a full day ashore and on the water. After breakfast a tender takes you to Cat Ba and you ride about 4 km through Viet Hai, a village in a valley inside Cat Ba National Park, by bicycle or electric car. Lunch is back on board while the ship moves to Ba Trai Dao beach for an afternoon of kayaking and swimming. Then a second sunset, dinner and a second night at anchor, and on day three a last kayak among the islands before brunch.

Marvel Travel’s three days use the extra day the same way (Viet Hai by bicycle, then Ba Trai Dao) but move the cave to the last morning and add Ao Ech on day one. Vega Legend swaps the beach afternoon for a 2.5 to 3 hour forest trek to Hai Quan Peak on Cat Ba. The route, day by day puts them side by side.

Who should take which

  • One night: a first visit on a tight schedule, or if you are going on to Ninh Binh or Sapa the same week. You see the bay; you do not see Cat Ba.
  • Two nights: you want a slower pace, a day of cycling and swimming, and two evenings at anchor. Couples and anyone who has flown a long way for the bay.
  • Ninh Binh plus one night: you want both places in three days. Carnival’s Ninh Binh combination is from $220 (checked November 2026) with the transfers included, but only one of its nights is on board.
