Lan Ha Bay Cruise Weather: When to Spend Two Nights

Lan Ha Bay cruise weather month by month: storm season, the 2026 sea bans, fog, rain and temperatures, and what happens to a three-day cruise when boats are held.

Updated November 2026

The best months for a two-night Lan Ha Bay cruise are October to May, avoiding the fog of February to April if you can. Storms reach this coast mostly from June to September, and when one does the sea is closed: in 2026 Hai Phong held boats in port twice, for about two days in early July and four in late August. No ban was in force on 1 November 2026, and the national forecasting centre expected fewer storms than usual in the East Sea for November.

Long-term normals for Bai Chay in Ha Long, the station nearest the bay, from Vietnam’s national technical regulation on natural-condition data, QCVN 02:2022/BXD (Ministry of Construction, data to 2017). There is no Cat Ba station in it.

Storm season and the 2026 bans

The same regulation puts Vietnam’s storm season at June to November, with most landfalls on the Quang Ninh to Thanh Hoa coast between June and September. When a storm approaches, the cities stop boats leaving port and lift the ban when the forecasting centre issues its last bulletin on the storm. In 2026:

  • Storm Maysak (No. 1), early July: Quang Ninh stopped overnight boats on Ha Long Bay from 12:00 on 3 July and all departures from 17:00; Hai Phong closed the sea from 16:00 on 3 July and lifted the ban at noon on 5 July, after Maysak came ashore near Mong Cai.
  • Storm Narra (No. 4), late August: both cities stopped tourist boats from 07:00 on 22 August while the storm stalled over the Quang Ninh - Hai Phong sea; Hai Phong reopened sea travel and the Dong Bai - Cai Vieng car ferry to Cat Ba at 08:00 on 26 August. More than 1,700 visitors were on Cat Ba during the ban.

Between storms there is a standing limit too: boats of the smaller VR-SI class may not sail in waves of 1.3 m or more, and VR-SB boats from 1.85 m, under Hai Phong’s instruction of August 2026 (document 10736/VP-XDCT), which also tells ports not to let tourist boats leave in bad weather.

What happens to a three-day booking

The cruises on this site say plainly that their itineraries change with the weather and the tide: a kayak stop becomes a bamboo boat, a beach afternoon moves. If a ban stops departures, your cruise does not sail; operators handle that their own way, so read the listing’s cancellation terms. Carnival’s and Marvel Travel’s three days allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Vega Legend refunds in full at six days or more before departure, half between two and six days, and nothing inside two days. In June to September, book the cancellable option and keep a spare day in Hanoi.

Safety on the water

On 14 June 2026 two tourist boats collided in Lan Ha Bay near Van Boi and one passenger died. Afterwards Cat Hai, the special zone that runs Cat Ba, required everyone on its tourist boats to wear life jackets, and the bays’ management board checks the weather, the passenger list and each boat before it leaves. Expect to be handed a life jacket for every tender, bamboo boat and kayak.
